The chancellor for SUNY campuses says he's hopeful to have students back to full in-person learning on campuses later this year.
Chancellor Jim Malatras says the decision by the state to open vaccines to residents ages 16 and older next week gives him hope that most of the staff and students will be protected from COVID-19 during the fall semester.
He believes these college kids could be back to what - until 2020 - was normal, and sticking to in-person on-campus learning.
Students on SUNY Purchase's campus told News 12 they cannot wait for the day they get back to learning in classrooms.
The provost from SUNY Purchase sent an email to students Monday, saying their top priority is getting as many students on campus safely.
Right now, they are planning for more in-person learning in the fall, but both scenarios would keep some remote learning.
Depending on vaccines distributed and COVID-19 cases, those plans can change.
The college will be updating students in the coming weeks based on guidance from SUNY, the state and the CDC.
There are more than 400,000 students on SUNY campuses.
