Two separate police standoffs within hours of each other forced evacuations in Rockland Wednesday.
Police shut down Thiells-Mount Ivy Road in Thiells around 12:30 p.m. after receiving a call about a distraught man. Investigators believe the man was unarmed, but nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
The SWAT team and the sheriff's department's bomb squad were called in. The team used a robot to fire a shotgun blast to blow down the door. After more than four hours, 43-year-old Anthony Colarusso came out peacefully. Police determined Colarusso was wanted on a cocaine charge and a parole violation.
As soon as the standoff was over, many officers rushed to Sloatsburg for another situation. Police and bomb units surrounded a house on Johnsontown Road. Investigators won't release any information about the situation and sent the media more than a mile away from the scene.
