The Tallman Fire Department has decided not to hire a paid assistant fire chief. Earlier this year, News 12 reported the department was considering to become the first fire agency in Rockland County to hire an assistant.

But an attorney says the department has decided to rearrange its priorities. Its now reviewing how many firefighters it can hire. The review is part of a "needs assessment" that it hopes to have completed by the time it adopts its budget in November.
