One Rockland County legislator is under fire after creating a plan to cut taxes at the gas pump. The legislator says the plan might keep more New Yorkers from buying their gas in New Jersey, although not everyone agrees.
Legislator Ed Day proposed the tax cuts five months ago, saying he thinks it would help residents by having the state and county taxes to be equal.
Speaking on County Executive Scott Vanderhoef's behalf, his Director of Communications countered Day's views, saying that times are too tough to cut taxes at the pump.
Gas prices in the county are about 30 cents higher than in New Jersey, which is why the county executive says that a six to eight cent tax discount won't make much of a difference. Vanderhoef says the tax would cause a $3 million shortfall at a time when the county is already battling a $52 million deficit.
