A summer heat wave has the potential to develop across the Hudson Valley.

News 12's Lauren Del Valle spoke with one area health care professional about how to stay cool during this week's potential heat wave and what signs to look out for when hanging out outside.

Temperatures in Westchester County and the surrounding Hudson Valley are expected to hit record highs this weekend into next week.

Evan Cohen, with Northern Westchester Hospital Mount Kisco, shared his advice on protecting oneself against the heat.

"Using lots of sunscreen. I really like the swim shirts...You know? Long sleeve shirts that really have great UV protection,” he said. “Wearing hats, sunglasses, and then trying to find shade and avoiding direct sunlight...especially in the middle of the day.”

Other things he added were to pay attention to possible symptoms of heat exhaustion.

“Nausea, headache, muscle cramps, fatigue, lightheadedness. But, generally with heat exhaustion, when you remove yourself from the heat exposure, you're going to feel better and there's not going to be any irreversible damage,” Cohen said.

People are also reminded to stay hydrated as much as possible while out in the heat.
