Residents of a seven-story apartment building in Greenburgh say they are struggling after the building's only elevator has been out of service for more than a week.
Tenants at 90 Manhattan Ave., one of the Fairview Manhattan Apartments, say the elevator has a history of breaking down. They say that the latest outage has left residents relying on stairs to get up and down in the building.
Several residents told News 12 the outage has created challenges for elderly tenants and those with mobility issues.
Some residents declined to speak publicly, citing concerns about potential retaliation from management.
In a letter to tenants, management said the fire department should only be contacted in emergency situations or when a resident with a disability is unable to safely use the stairs.
Building management told News 12 the elevator's encoder and encoder cable are damaged. According to management, replacement parts have been ordered and the matter has been escalated with the manufacturer.
However, officials said there is currently no timeline for when repairs will be completed, and residents will be notified once additional information becomes available.
Management also said the building's elevators were replaced about 10 years ago.
