Freezing rain and icy streets created a treacherous commute across the Bronx as the city saw its first major winter storm of 2007 Wednesday.

The wet snow started Tuesday night and turned to hail. Drivers also had to deal with cleaning off their cars and long delays. Sanitation workers had a hard time navigating windy streets with low visibility. About 1,500 plowers were deployed after at least two inches of snow fell, in keeping with city policy. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says flyers can expect delays between 15 to 60 minutes at major airports. Officials urge people to take it slow and give themselves extra time if they must leave their homes. Meanwhile, Con Edison warns customers to stay away from downed power lines and report them at 1-800-75-CONED.

The storm didn't give students the snow day they hoped for. Public schools opened and buses were operating on or close to schedule.
