Police say gift card scams typically involve someone posing as a trusted entity, such as a government agency, a utility company, or even a loved one in distress.
Officials say scammers will contact you via phone, email, or social media, claiming that you owe money or that a loved one needs urgent assistance. They will then instruct you to purchase gift cards and provide them with the card details, allowing them to drain the funds.
Police say legitimate organizations will never ask for payment through gift cards.
Anyone who believes they were targeted or fallen victim to a gift card scam, it's vital to report it immediately. Contact the Sheriff's Office at (845) 225-4300.
