As people begin to head back to the office, commute routines are changing.

“There's been a lot of traffic on the roads in New York City in the last few weeks,” said Caleb Silver, of Investopedia. “If you look at what's happening in the bridges and tunnels, commuting into work, however, has slowed downward about 66% of pre-pandemic levels, especially over the past few weeks.”

These changes are also impacting those who are still using mass transit to get to work.

“Office occupancy, according to Castle's back to work barometer is only at around 34.7% of where it was compared to 2019. Now, some of that is because of the holidays over the past few weeks. But still commuters coming into the office of New York City is right at about 50% of where it was compared to 2019,” said Silver.

These changes are expected to continue, as some companies are mandating workers to return to work at least three days a week starting this month.
