They are back. Those annoying spotted lantern flies have been spotted and experts remind us they can do an awful lot of damage. I guess it was only a matter of time, right. News Connecticut's mark. So reports on the danger they pose to us, the spotted lantern fly has already found a home in New York City and it's heading to Connecticut. We're getting a lot of reports from Greenwich, New Canon Stanford, Norwalk, South Port in New Haven County. We're receiving a lot of reports from uh Milford and orange. The plant eating pests are relatively new to our area. They came in a load of stone from Korea. They're native to uh China and Korea and, and areas uh like that. Uh But they came into a load on a load of stone into a stone yard in Pennsylvania in 2014, state entomologist Victoria Smith says the bugs can be a real nuisance because they can multiply rather quickly and they pose a real threat to Connecticut vineyards. If you grow grapes, they will kill a vineyard within 2 to 3 years. The state alerted local vineyards and they are now taking steps to protect their crops. Smith says the spotted lantern fly sucks all the sap out of the vine and creates a sticky honey dew that causes mold in the vines and kills them off. That is leaving a sour taste with wine lovers and the Connecticut Package Stores Association some concern that if it could be possibly diminishing some of the product that's coming into the winery, Sean Hughes with the Connecticut Package Stores Association says a few years ago, Pennsylvania spent about $20 million just to get rid of these bugs. Experts say if you see them, you should kill them by any means possible. In Norwalk, Mark Sudal, who's 12 Connecticut gardening. Experts say you can use a mixture of ne oil and insecticide to protect your plants.
