Cranbury Township officials in Middlesex County have taken another step toward seizing a family farm under eminent domain for an affordable housing project.
The farm, located along South River Road, has been in Andy Henry's family since 1850. He has been fighting for months to keep it.
"My great-grandparents bought it. It's been a part of our family for a long time, and we want to keep it there," Henry told News 12.
Last week, he received an appraisal notice from a realty company retained by Cranbury Township, which says it plans to inspect the 21-acre parcel and determine its value.
"The township jumped the gun in our opinion," said Henry. "We didn't think the township was going to start those eminent domain proceedings prior to the court looking at the plan they submitted or any objections to the plan."
The land is currently being used as a cattle farm. Henry filed a lawsuit against the township back in June after learning that it was being targeted for a project that would provide affordable housing for other residents.
He says he plans to continue fighting for his family's estate.
