Rockland County is now mourning the loss of two teens killed in separate car crashes just weeks apart.
Vladyslav Hvalyk,16, was killed in a car crash last Thursday in New City. The teen driver is now charged with vehicular homicide.
The tragedy comes on the heels of Jacqueline Zangrilli's death. The Suffern teen was killed in another car crash - with that teen driver also facing charges.
Crashes are the leading cause of death among teens, with the CDC estimating they claim six lives every single day.
Lauren Zimmerman-Meade is with the youth safety organization called Students Against Destructive Decisions, or SADD. She says most crashes among young drivers come down to inexperience.
"It's something that requires practice, much like any sport would, so when we're talking about young drivers they're not equipped with these skills," she says.
SADD reported that last year there were more than 36,553 police-reported crashes in New York involving teens. AAA says common causes include speeding, drinking and driving and distractions.
Clarkstown Detective Norm Peters tells News 12 he's seen far too many tragedies involving teen drivers in his 22 years on the force.
"It's phenomenal you got your license, but you need to remember there are dangers out there, and I think the dangers of the road needs to be spoken to the young drivers," says Peters.
May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, leading right into the deadliest season for teen drivers.
A GoFundMe for Hvalyk's family has already raised more than 55,000.
A GoFundMe for Zangrilli's family has already raised more than $130,000
