A new U-turn installed in Westchester aims to help first responders get to an emergency faster.
The Thruway Authority says it finished work on the U-turn near Exit 17, which should make it easier for the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department and other first responders to get where they need to go.
It gives them a safer area to cross the highway and a wider turning radius.
In the past with heavy traffic, firetrucks had to wait to cross or even drive more than 2 miles to the next exit and then go back the other way. This added up to 10 minutes to their response time.
The Thruway Authority says it used its own construction crews to get it done and used input from elected officials and the fire department.
