For Broadway fans, Friday is a big day as masks will be optional for the month of July. The curtain is closing on masks for now, but it might not be a permanent step.
The Broadway League recently announced that Broadway theaters in New York City will drop their masking requirements after lifting proof of vaccination rules in May. Some shows are choosing to keep their requirements, so be sure to check your ticket confirmation for before attending.
While there is no longer a mask mandate in place, the Broadway League said in part, “audience members are still encouraged to wear masks in theatres.”
This doesn’t mean masks are gone from Broadway forever. After the month of July, the League says it will evaluate mask rules on a month-to-month basis.
This all comes after several actors have had to miss performances after testing positive for COVID-19, like Hugh Jackman of the Music Man and Beanie Feldstein who is starring in Funny Girl.
The League says fans can expect future protocols to be announced sometime in mid-July.
