Traffic stop leads to seizure of 51 pounds of marijuana in the Town of Southeast

Police say a black GMC SUV was pulled over around 2:57 a.m. on Saturday after deputies observed multiple traffic violations while patrolling eastbound on I-84.

A Connecticut woman is facing multiple charges after police discovered 51 pounds of marijuana and suspected ketamine during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 in the Town of Southeast.

Police say a black GMC SUV was pulled over around 2:57 a.m. on Saturday after deputies observed multiple traffic violations while patrolling eastbound on I-84. During the stop, deputies observed signs that the driver may have been impaired by drugs.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Reynalda G. Sierra Mejia, of West Hartford, Connecticut.

Officers searched the vehicle and found approximately 51 pounds of cannabis packaged in numerous vacuum-sealed bags, along with a quantity of suspected narcotics that field-tested positive for ketamine.

Police say Sierra Mejia was transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility.

She was charged with first-degree criminal possession of cannabis, a Class D felony; seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor; and operating a motor vehicle while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor. She was also issued multiple traffic tickets.

Sierra Mejia was arraigned in Southeast and released on her own recognizance.
