Tuckahoe police say that five of the department's six patrol cars were damaged over the weekend.

It estimates that it will cost more than $12,000 to repair them.

Police say Roy Alexander Jr. used a baseball bat on the vehicles Saturday.

The 26-year-old man, who the police chief called a "troubled individual," also allegedly destroyed a wreath at a memorial for fallen officers.

The incident sparked a showing of community support. A local VFW replaced the damaged wreath Monday, and a nearby cafe delivered sandwiches and salads to the department.

The damaged cars are now at the repair shop, leaving Tuckahoe police with only one marked car. The department needs at least three to effectively do patrols, which is why Eastchester police stepped in to loan the department two vehicles.

The suspect in the case is now charged with six counts of criminal mischief.

Police have not given a motive for the attack but do say they have history with Alexander.

"He recently plead to a case where he assaulted one of the Tuckahoe police officers," says Tuckahoe Police Chief John Costanzo.
