Village leaders in Tuckahoe tonight voted down an appeal from a developer that would have allowed him to start demolishing a historic home.
The Ward House, located at 230 White Plains Road, was built in the 1700s. The structure and property it's on have been playing a leading role in a dispute that dates to 2021, when the property was bought by a developer.
The Village of Tuckahoe marked the Ward House as a historic landmark within a year of that purchase. Since then, the Tuckahoe Historic Preservation Commission has rejected applications for the developer to begin work on the home.
The developer has tried to appeal those decisions, arguing that not being able to work on the home is creating financial hardships. Village leaders disagreed.
There has been a lawsuit in the workers brought by the developer against the village and the coalition to protect the home, asking a judge to overturn the historical designation.
An attorney for the developer said he couldn't comment now on what's next for the property.
