Construction crews building the new Tappan Zee Bridge reached another milestone in building the new span.
Just recently the giant I Lift NY super crane installed the new eastbound span's final blue steel girder for this phase of construction. On the westbound span, the super crane will install the final handful of girders during the coming weeks.
The remaining girders will be placed after the demolition of the existing Tappan Zee Bridge scheduled for 2017 or 2018.
Crews are also installing three turnarounds on the new bridge. The roadway connections being installed between the twin spans will allow traffic to be diverted as well as give emergency responders quick access in the event of an accident.
Bridge officials say the public needs to be aware that crews are pouring concrete for the new Westchester landing in Tarrytown this week. That means additional traffic as concrete trucks are traveling near South Broadway in the area of the southbound Thruway.
