Ulster County man sentenced for hate crime assault in Woodstock

Shayne Wilber of Woodstock, Ulster County, has been sentenced to prison after committing a hate crime assault against an individual based on their sexual orientation.
According to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office, the incident occurred at a bar last April when Wilber directed homophobic slurs at the victim upon learning of their sexual orientation. He then proceeded to physically attack the victim, throwing an object that injured their lip and subsequently jumping over the bar to continue the assault.
During the attack, Wilber brandished a box cutter, further escalating the violence. He pleaded guilty to charges of menacing and assault, both classified as hate crimes.
As a result of his actions, Wilber has been sentenced to two to four years in state prison. Additionally, he is required to submit a letter of apology to the victim and the community acknowledging the harm caused by his actions.
