The Vax Up Westchester campaign offered people car washes while they got their COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday.
Volunteers targeted zip codes with the lowest vaccination rates, such as Fairview and Elmsford in the Town of Greenburgh.
"We really want to make it as easy as possible," says Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. "A lot of the older people have already gotten it, so it's really the younger people that we have to persuade."
The vaccine site at Mr. Bubbles Carwash on Saw Mill River Road in Elmsford took walk-ins, no appointments were required.
Feiner says the challenge is getting those who are vaccine hesitant to get the shot. He says less than 10 people agreed to be vaccinated at the site on Saturday.
"Some people don't trust government, don't trust what people say about the vaccine, they're a little nervous, or they're just lazy and don't want to bother," Feiner says. "I think they have to realize, the only reason life is getting closer to normal is because a lot of people have taken the vaccines," Feiner says.
Another volunteer-run pop-up site was held at the Pleasantville Farmers Market on Saturday. It was able to vaccinate nearly 60 people with the Pfizer shot, according to staff there.
