The family of a Bridgeport man who was hacked to death with an ax in 2011 says they want his killer to return to the state psychiatric hospital from which he was released in 2023 after the state's Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB) deemed him "stabilized."
Tyree Lincoln Smith killed 35-year-old Angel Gonzalez on Brooks Street on the East Side of Bridgeport. He was found "not guilty by reason of insanity" in 2013.
"Angel Gonzalez was not just some homeless man - he was our blessed loved one," said 56-year-old Talitha Frazier, of Bridgeport.
"Angel was my brother-in-law, and I'm speaking on behalf of his immediate family when I say Tyree should never have been released to begin with," Frazier said.
An email from the PSRB sent to the victim's family, and obtained by News 12, says the family will have a chance to give victim impact statements when the panel convenes next month to assess Smith's continued fitness to live in a supervised setting outside of a state psychiatric hospital. Smith has been living in a group home in Waterbury since his release, officials say. The PSRB hearing is set for Feb. 21, according to the email.
News 12 contacted the PSRB and the public defender's office for a comment, but neither had responded by the time this report was first posted.
