A 67-year-old man has now been identified by police as the victim who was fatally struck early Monday morning by a Coach USA bus in Middletown.

Video that was given to News 12 shows the man on an Exxon gas station surveillance camera - several minutes before he was struck and during the crash.

The man is seen shuffling his feet and seemingly having problems walking while crossing Route 211.

The convenience store clerk says the victim was a regular customer and had just purchased a lottery ticket inside the store.

Middletown police say the victim, whose name was not released, was hit by the commuter bus as he tried to cross the busy roadway.

The bus remained at the scene for hours and News 12 was there when it was towed, shortly before noon.

The gas station clerk says it happened around 6:15 a.m.

Police haven’t revealed the details of what happened, but the video shows it was still dark and that the man appeared to be in the middle of the road when he was hit by the bus traveling westbound.

Neighbors say the area is dangerous for pedestrians.

“Honestly, it’s a mess,” said one man who asked not to be identified.

Ana Ayala moved to Middletown last August and says, “Too much. {There are} always accident{s} here on the street.”

There are several nearby crosswalks, but the incident happened on a stretch of Route 211 where there isn’t one.

“For that to be happening like that, especially an old man, it’s very devastating,” says Maurico Zeferino, of Middletown.

The crash shut down nearby roads for several hours during the investigation. Neighbors say they’re devastated for the victim’s loved ones.

“I was just here,” says one woman who asked not to be identified. “{It} makes me feel sad.”
