A frightened family was forced to move after their Wallkill apartment was invaded and burglarized by three men Thursday.
The owner of the apartment, Cary James Brownley, says he went to answer the door and saw a young man standing in the hallway. Brownley didn?t know the visitor and thought he had the wrong apartment. Brownley was about to redirect him when two more teens rushed in and pistol-whipped him in the head, he says.
Although suffering from a broken ankle, Brownley says he attempted to wrestle the gun out of the burglar?s hand twice in order to protect his family, including his 18-month-old son who was asleep nearby.
Despite his efforts, however, the trio ransacked Brownley?s apartment, even going into his son's room in search for valuables.
"He woke up, he was standing in his crib, crying," Brownley recalls.
Police say the three men, all of them wearing masks and covering their faces with hoodies, took off with $2,000 worth of loot, including jewelry and cell phones, which were later found by an investigator near a fence.
Authorities believe the suspects got away through an opening in a fence and got into a getaway car that was waiting for them near the County View Manor apartment complex. Investigators also believe the suspects were familiar with the area.
"I feel like I was targeted, I feel like they knew what they were doing," Brownley says.
Police spent the day canvassing the neighborhood. No arrests have been made. Anyone with any information about the burglary is asked to call Wallkill police at 845-692-7863.
