Warwick fire kills mom on Mother's Day
A charred farmhouse in Warwick is all that remained Monday after a fire claimed the life of a woman on Mother's Day.
Fire officials say the blaze broke out around 11 p.m. on a farm while everyone was asleep. Firefighters rescued the owner, Virginia Marten, who was trapped in her first-floor bedroom. Barn manager Pam Henry lived on the third floor with her husband, Patrick, and daughter, Caitlyn. Henry's husband and daughter made it out alive, but responders say they found Henry herself dead inside.
Authorities say the fire started on the first floor of the home, which did not have smoke detectors. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Mourners gathered around the horse barn to remember Henry, who was a riding instructor. "She was a joy to be around. We're gonna miss her deeply," said Jackie Kemp, Henry?s best friend. "I've been crying since last night. I don't think the tears are gonna stop."
Henry had spent the day riding horses and eating dinner with family and friends before the fire.
