Was April 2025 the mildest on record in the Hudson Valley?

It was dry, at times cold enough to snow, but when you look at the bigger picture it was much warmer than usual.

April 2025 is behind us now, but it sure was memorable. If you felt like the weather was unusually pleasant, you weren’t imagining things. This past month delivered some of the nicest spring weather the Hudson Valley has seen in years, and we even broke records in White Plains, for the the number of warm days. It was far from perfect. Although April was drier than usual, it rained more days than it didn't and we even had snow!
A New Record Number of Warm Days
April brought a record 13 days that hit 70 degrees or higher in White Plains, shattering the previous April record of 10 set back in 2010. We typically only see about five 70-degree days during the month of April. Despite the frequency of warmth, temperatures stayed mild. The highest temperature all month was a balmy 85°F.
A Chilly Start, but a Warm Finish
Although the month ended up warmer than average overall, it didn't start that way. Winter came back during a cold snap between April 7 and April 13, especially on April 12 when temperatures struggled to reach just 40°F—a new record cold high for the date—and even brought minor snow.
Still, when all was said and done, the average high for April settled at 62°F and the average low at 42°F—both about three degrees above normal. The historical climate averages for April in the region are 59°F for a high and 39°F for a low, so April 2025 definitely leaned mild.
A Surprisingly Dry Month, Despite Frequent Showers
Even though rain was reported on almost every day of the month (20 out of 30), April 2025 was the driest April in 12 years. The monthly rainfall total was only 1.82 inches, less than half of the average 4.20 inches. The wettest day—April 6—only managed to bring 0.46 inches of rain.
This unusual pattern of frequent but very light precipitation meant little relief for the region’s ongoing drought. Moderate drought conditions continue to affect Orange, Rockland, and much of Putnam and Westchester Counties. The good news? Earlier in the month, parts of the region had been in severe drought, but that has now eased slightly.
Looking Ahead to May
May is expected to begin with some much-needed rainfall starting this weekend and perhaps into next week. Unfortunately, there is the potential for flash flooding, so tune into the latest forecast for an update. Longer-term outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center suggest we’re likely to see a continuation of the warm and dry trend after early next week. That means while the sunny days may continue, the drought may as well.
For now, April 2025 will be remembered as a standout month—warmer, drier, and more pleasant than usual, with just enough weather to keep us on our toes.
