Family, community leaders and supporters joined a mother Saturday to honor the memory of her daughter, who was fatally shot in Baychester last August.

What should have been a celebration of Anthonaya Campbell's 18th birthday became a day of remembrance, reflection and hope.

Campbell, of Hartford, Connecticut, was one of five people who were shot during a basketball tournament at Haffen Park. She spent six days hospitalized before she was taken off life support.

For her mother, Dr. Jennifer Gardner Talbot, the pain of losing her daughter remains overwhelming.

Determined to ensure her daughter's legacy lives on, Gardner Talbot created the Anthonaya Hyacinth Campbell Foundation. It which focuses on preventing youth violence through mentorship, advocacy and support for young people.

Raymour & Flanigan on Bartow Avenue presented a $500 donation to the foundation and encouraged others in the community to support the organization's mission.

While the loss of her daughter remains a daily struggle, Gardner Talbot says the foundation is helping her transform grief into action.

A memorial vigil for the victims of last year's mass shooting is being planned at Haffen Park on the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, on Sunday, Aug. 23.
