West Point cadet rifleman sets sights on Beijing gold
At just 19, a U.S. Military Academy cadet is aiming for glory and gold in the men's 10-meter air rifle Olympic competition.
West Point freshman Stephen Scherer is an expert rifleman. He spent three days under intense pressure at the qualifiers, shooting his personal best every day.
Army Maj. Ron Wigger, who is traveling to Beijing to see Scherer compete, coached the cadet. However, Wigger says he can't take the credit.
"He's the one that put in the effort and he's the one that handled the pressure for the three days," says Wigger. "It's just unheard of," he says referring to Scherer's young age. "You have to have a strong mental game."
According to Wigger, Scherer has a remarkable ability to focus and control his body movement when he's aiming.
Scherer will participate in the opening ceremonies Friday, August 8. He competes in the games Sunday, August 10.
