Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah announced Wednesday that a former corrections officer was charged in the 1997 death of his ex-wife.
News 12 was at the crime scene in 1997 after Nusinaida Ramos was found beaten and strangled at her Collins Street apartment in Yonkers.
Her ex-husband, Rafael Ramos, was arrested in Sleepy Hollow and charged with the murder.
The former corrections officer at Sing Sing Correctional Facility was long-suspected as the killer.
Rocah said this arrest is a result of the new cold case bureau, which has been able to make progress on several cold cases since it was formed in 2021.
"My goal with establishing this bureau and taking office is to enable our office to prioritize solving these cases and seek closure and justice for victims and families," Rocah said.
She said there are approximately 135 open cold case murders in Westchester County.
