Westchester group aims to educate ex-inmates about their right to vote

The Youth Shelter Program of Westchester hosted a voter education and registration drive for formerly incarcerated individuals at Riverfront Public Library in Yonkers on Monday.
Staff from the organization said they wanted to empower and inform this portion of the population about their right to vote.
Jordan Cormier, the director of programming for the group, said there's a common misconception that people no longer have this right once they go to jail.
"A lot of times they think, 'Oh, you know what, they took away my right to vote.' That's not always the case," Cormier said. "We have to go case by case on these things. We also have to make sure that they understand there is a chance, and their voice does matter."
