Westchester County
legislators unanimously passed a resolution against dumping radioactive water
in the Hudson River.
The county says it's
the first Hudson Valley municipality to oppose a proposal from Holtec
International – the company tasked to decommission Indian Point.
The county says that
company planned to dump a million gallons of toxic wastewater from the
nuclear plant into the river.
Westchester
leaders say that waste has contaminants like tritium, which can cause cancer
when inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin in large quantities.
Many of the people
involved say they expect similar resolutions from other municipalities, but
they want to see Gov. Kathy Hochul take bigger action to stop corporate
polluters.
