293ds agoWestchester County is responding to the recent arrival of immigrants at the Port Authority bus terminal in New York City.
Marti Michael, vice president of Westchester Jewish Coalition for Immigration, said the nonprofit sent out an email calling on volunteers to help receive immigrants arriving at Port Authority.
"When a bus pulls in and the whole bus is filled with people in need, you need a lot of volunteers to get them what they need," said Michael.
New York City is the latest city to begin receiving buses from Texas with immigrants seeking asylum. It's a move by Texas Gov. Greg Abbot, who disagrees with New York's immigration policies.
"I'm horrified, I'm angry and I am very sad for them," said Michael.
Another organization based in Westchester, Neighbors Link, is also mobilizing.
"We do have a plan in place if people do come to this area," said Carola Bracco, executive director of Neighbors Link.
Bracco said the organization helps new arrivals year-round providing legal assistance, family reunification and support, including English classes.
Last year, Neighbors Link had 850 legal cases for those seeking citizenship and asylum.
Michael said three buses with immigrant travelers are expected to arrive Wednesday morning.
