Westchester police say an increase in DWI checkpoints and more intense training is helping to crackdown on drunk diving in the region.

?Newer officers are getting better training in enforcement and what to look for,? Lieutenant Donald McArthur says.

Area police have began setting up daytime checkpoints in addition to ones at night in an effort to catch more drunk drivers.

Westchester police arrested 2,515 people for drunken driving last year. Police from Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties say they?ve made for more than 18,000 DWI arrests combined in the last five years.

?When you see the loss of life, property, the way it affects people, it's not worth it,? says McArthur. ?Why people take that risk?I don't understand.?
