With the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show continuing in Tarrytown this week, local businesses are receiving a big opportunity to get a summer boost.
More than 3,000 dogs entered in the competition, which means tens of thousands of breeds, handlers, staff and spectators are staying, eating and exploring Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.
"We like the out-of-towners just to come for the day and spend their money,” said Laura Rey Iannarelli, president of the Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce. “It's great for our businesses."
Some stores that are normally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays opened up specifically just to welcome customers coming from this event.
"There's a lot of really nice architecture, which I love architecture and just it being homey,” said Melanie Wood, Florida.
She and her friend Linda Bellin returned to Westminster in Tarrytown this summer for the second year in a row.
"We're going back to Bella's Restaurant because we came here last year and loved it,” added Bellin.
Business officials hope this year will bring even better profits than last year when the event was held at Lyndhurst without spectators.
