Wicked winter weather hits the Bronx
All New York City schools are closed Monday due to a winter storm that's dumping snow across the Bronx.
Between 8 and 10 inches of snow are expected to fall before the storm tapers off by Monday afternoon. Temperatures for Monday night should be in the low 20s.
The weather conditions resulted in a messy commute for Bronx drivers, despite the city sending out about 2,500 sanitation workers to spread salt and plow the streets. According to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, more than 100,000 tons of salt are on hand to be used.
As the wintry mix quickly fell on cars, sidewalks and streets Monday, Bronx residents broke out shovels and salt to begin digging out. Drivers also crawled at reduced speeds.
?It?s hard enough to travel around New York,? says Harvey Liberman. ?At least the schools are closed, which means it takes all the school buses off the streets.?
The first New York City snow day in five years led to the rescheduling of math tests from Monday to Tuesday. At Adlai E Stevenson High School on Lafayette Avenue, some students showed up for classes before being turned away.
?I really wanted school today because I?m applying to colleges ? and I need to get my stuff out,? says Richard Soril, a junior.
