(06/16/06) MAMARONECK ? While fans watch the best golfers in the world compete at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Course, they may not realize the technology behind the leader board.
Wireless technology, similar to that of a personal digital assistant (PDA), is being used to keep the leader board as current as possible. Scores come in from the green and are quickly relayed to volunteers in charge of the board. Despite the new technology, workers still post the scores by hand.
Boards are available inside the media tent for members of the press. Another summary is posted outside for fans.
