People are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel for the pandemic after one year.
COVID-19 cases are dropping, vaccinations are rising and restrictions easing, but for those who lost loved ones to the virus, COVID's effects will be long lasting.
This month marks one year since Makeda Watkins lost her mother to COVID-19.
Mary Stokes lost her battle with the coronavirus on March 25 last year, just one week after the state closed down everything to slow down the spread.
One year later, the virus has claimed over half a million lives in the U.S. and counting.
Stokes' daughter describes her as a warm, loving spirit everyone gravitated toward. She was also a single mom who sacrificed to send Watkins to private school.
The only child is now cherishing photos and memories.
Even as communities get back to normal, she says she would give anything to have another conversation with her.
