A motorist has been hospitalized after police say she fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into an ice cream shop in Sparrow Bush.

The incident happened at around 11:30 a.m. at Lenny's Ice Cream Stand on Route 42 Friday, according to authorities.

Fire officials say 41-year-old Catherine Banks struck a guardrail several yards away from the stand and that the impact sent the car across Route 42, into a concrete bench, and it then landed in the building.

Officials say two people living in an apartment above the stand were home when it happened, but are unhurt.

Fire officials say Banks was taken to Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis and is expected to be OK.
