Work resumes to repair longest road in Putnam County
After more than a year of delays, repair work has resumed on Peekskill Hollow Road, the longest road in Putnam County.
For over three years, residents in the area have been eagerly awaiting the restoration of Peekskill Hollow Road, which has been plagued with starts and stops since its initiation in 2021. The original contractor abandoned the project, leading to further complications and traffic headaches.
"It was a long project to begin with, and then it became longer when we had trouble with the contractor. That's in the past," says Putnam Valley Town Councilman Louis Luongo.
The project aims to address longstanding issues that have been causing inconveniences and safety hazards for commuters, school buses, and first responders.
During a meeting held recently, the new contractor, ELQ Industries, presented a comprehensive timeline for the repairs. The company has initiated a two-week inspection and corrective work process, marking the official commencement of the extensive project. The scope of the repairs includes multiple bridge rehabilitations, lane widening, new sidewalks, turn lanes, traffic signals, and drainage improvements.
"We're going to approach this project aggressively, safely, efficiently to ensure that there is the least amount of impact on the residents," said CEO Samuel Etre.
Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne expressed his enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing the shared goal of seeing it completed successfully.
"There's a genuine excitement to see it not only start but be completed, and that's what we're all driving toward."
The repair work officially began on Monday, and the two main bridges involved in the project are expected to be completed within the next nine months. The remainder of the work is scheduled to conclude by the end of July 2024. Residents and commuters can look forward to smoother and safer travel on Peekskill Hollow Road upon the project's completion.
