Gov. Kathy Hochul has made the right to care for your siblings an eligible criteria for those seeking paid family leave across New York.
The governor signed the addition into the Paid Family Leave Act Monday afternoon.
The expansion qualifies workers for paid leave to care for their siblings with a serious health condition.
Hochul is calling on the federal government to follow the state's lead with nationwide legislation.
"While New Yorkers benefit from these progressive ideals here...I feel bad for the rest of the nation that has not caught up with us," Hochul says.
Over 100,000 New Yorkers take paid family leave every year.
