Since a video showing popular rapper Sofaygo wearing a hoodie from his streetwear brand went viral with nearly 2 million views on TikTok, the budding fashion business of 22-year-old Yonkers native Mariano "Mari" Montague is booming.
The video racked up millions of views and launched his fledgling fashion business into the stratosphere.
Now, people from all over the world want to wear the Roosevelt High School graduate's brand. It's inspired by his love of rap music and Japanese animation.
Montague says, "What I wanted to do was combine both worlds. So, people can appreciate the art of anime but also have the fit of street wear."
The designer was working as a cashier at a ShopRite supermarket in Yonkers when the pandemic began. He was laid off, so it gave him an opportunity to get creative.
Out of boredom, he learned how to sew. Then, Montague started making hats, before he expanded to clothing.
The goal is to eventually see his brand, Angelic Earthling, spread far beyond just clothing.
