A boil water advisory remains in effect for part of southwest Yonkers after a major water main break caused by a state contractor working on the Saw Mill Parkway.

Officials say the contractor accidentally struck a 30-inch City of Yonkers water main between Axminster Street and Ashburton Avenue, leading to a drop in water pressure and concerns about possible contamination.

Crews have been working hard to repair the damage along Nepperhan Avenue. Water service was temporarily interrupted for some residents and businesses while a permanent fix was made, but officials said service was restored by 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The affected area includes 32 single-family homes on Moquette Row North and 10 commercial buildings on Nepperhan Avenue between Lake Avenue and Ashburton Avenue. Cases of bottled water were delivered to impacted residents.

Some residents described the outage as an inconvenience, particularly those with family members who rely on regular access to water for medical needs. Others said they understood the situation was accidental and have been able to manage through the disruption.

City officials say the boil water advisory is expected to remain in effect through Friday as a precaution. Residents in the affected area are advised to boil water for at least one minute before drinking it or using it in food preparation.

County officials say the advisory will remain in effect after service is restored until the County Health Department receives two rounds of satisfactory bacteriological test results confirming the water is safe.
