Yorktown town officials said Saturday relief is on the way for residents who have experienced issues with garbage pick-up.

The collection woes have affected thousands for the past several months.

Town Supervisor Tom Diana told News 12 on Saturday that problem-plagued Competitive Carting no longer holds the contract for garbage and recyclables collection. He said he "released" the company, effective immediately, on Friday.

A temporary fleet of workers and trucks then hit the streets in a massive collection effort.

Diana said an estimated 40,000 residents saw undependable garbage collections, mounting garbage piles and inconsistent service almost from the beginning, when Competitive Carting won the bid against AAA Carting several months ago. He said the notion that the town could save $1.5 million over the course of five years was inviting. But Diana said problems soon emerged, including missed pickups, vehicle breakdowns and labor issues that continued for months.

To add to the difficulties, he said five of Competitive Carting's trucks were re-possessed this week, which left them with limited resources to serve the town.

A News 12 crew that visited Yorktown on Saturday observed that the streets were clear, garbage cans were empty and there was not a bag of garbage in sight.

Diana said residents will finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief as trucks from a newly contracted garbage collection company hit the streets on Tuesday morning.
