The clock is ticking for single-use plastics in Westchester County.

County Executive George Latimer has signed legislation to phase out plastic forks, spoons, knives and condiments for certain situations.

Food service operators will only be allowed to hand out plastic items by customer request.

Officials say the legislation will help the environment and reduce costs for local businesses.

Businesses will be given a 6-month grace period to comply to the new law.

If they don't comply, they will be fined.

Health care facilities are exempt.
