A 12-year-old boy is facing a host of charges Monday after allegedly leading Newburgh police on a wild chase in a stolen van.
Police say they spotted the vehicle traveling the wrong direction on Broadway near West Street at about 1:30 a.m. They tried to stop the van but say the driver just kept going. A chase ensued and ended when police say the boy lost control of the van and smashed into a church sign. Police say he fled the scene on foot but was caught in the back yard of a nearby house.
According to police, the boy stole the van from The House of Refuge Church on Broadway. The boy is charged with grand larceny, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of stolen property and reckless driving. He was released to his mother's custody and is due back in Orange Family Court at a later date.
