Two people were killed and 72 residents were displaced after a massive fire tore through an apartment building at 308 West Front Street in Plainfield early Sunday morning.
The fire broke out around 1:05 a.m., forcing families to rush into the street with little time to grab belongings.
Andres Ixcuna, who lived on the second floor with his wife and 28-day-old baby, said they escaped with nothing.
“This was a nightmare,” he said. “We didn’t even grab any papers, nothing for the baby. We came with empty hands.”
City officials confirmed the tragedy and said a coordinated emergency response is underway. The Plainfield Performing Arts Center (PPAC) has been opened in partnership with the American Red Cross to provide intake services for displaced families and may transition into an overnight shelter if needed. The Red Cross has already provided meals, and shower facilities are on standby.
Multiple agencies, including the Plainfield Office of Emergency Management, Union County OEM, and State OEM, are working together to support recovery efforts. Plainfield Police are providing security at PPAC, and CERT teams have been activated for logistical support.
Mayor Adrian O. Mapp called it “a heartbreaking day for our community,” adding, “We mourn the loss of two lives and stand united in our commitment to support the 72 residents who were displaced.”
The identities of the victims have not yet been released. Plainfield Public Schools said in a statement, “We are heartbroken by the loss of life and the impact on families, including members of our school community.”
The city will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
