Police say two teens were hospitalized with serious injuries Tuesday after their car crashed into a utility pole in Orange County.
Authorities suspect the 18-year-old driver, whose name is not being released, was racing another teen driver while on their way to Orange-Ulster BOCES for classes. Police say the driver was going more than 80 miles per hour when she lost control of her Chevrolet Cobalt and smashed into a telephone pole. The passenger, 18-year-old Jonathan Wright, of Unionville, was badly injured.
Beth Marshall, who lives near the crash scene, says many drivers speed through the 55 mile per hour zone.
Police say the teens in both cars are students at Minisink Valley High School and all took classes at BOCES.
According to police, Wright was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Authorities say the driver, who is from Middletown, will likely be ticketed and could face criminal charges.
