‘Adopt-a-senior’ pandemic tradition continues online for Newburgh grads

A pandemic-era senior tradition is continuing this graduation season for Newburgh students.
The “adopt-a-senior” movement started on Facebook in 2020 when COVID-19 prevented seniors from having traditional events like prom and graduation.
The Newburgh group is still going strong with almost 1,500 local members who want to give grads a little extra recognition for finishing high school.
People post pictures of their students with a write-up about them and the hashtag #notadopted.
Other community members can then comment saying they'd like to "adopt" the senior and send a gift!
The poster then changes the status to say “adopted.”
"So many people wanted to continue it so I'm like, why can't we keep supporting future seniors as well," said administrator Danielle Morton. "So, we just continue doing it every year."
Newburgh's graduation this year is June 22.
