Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz joined the Red Cross in Farmington on Wednesday to raise awareness of the emergency blood shortage.
She says the country-wide shortage is affecting local hospitals.
Bysiewicz says one blood donation can save up to three lives.
Red Cross officials said restrictions on the LGBTQ community to donate blood have been lifted.
"We are facing the worst blood shortage that we have seen in 20 years, and we have the shortage because fewer people are giving blood," Bysiewicz said. "So this poses really a significant and concerning risk to our patients."
The month of January is considered National Blood Donor Month.
