The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is reminding commuters about the Fair Fares program and getting a discount on public transportation.

The program is available to New York City residents between the ages of 18-64 who meet certain income requirements. Those who qualify are eligible to ride the subway and certain buses for 50% off.

The MTA says around 327,000 New Yorkers are enrolled, yet around 1 million residents could be eligible.

Officials set up a booth in Atlantic Terminal to remind people to check their eligibility and to help them enroll.

"For some New Yorkers, $2.90 is a choice between a subway ride and maybe a medication or something else in their life that's important. So, I think what's incumbent upon us to do is make the system as affordable as possible, and I think the city is enabling that," said Richard Davey, the president of New York City Transit.
