A DEC Environmental Conservation police officer euthanized an adult bear on Sept. 24 after determining it posed a danger to the public.

The bear, classified as "Class 1" due to its interaction with the public, had entered a densely populated community.

The DEC reminds residents to keep a safe distance from bears to ensure public and animal safety.

To minimize human-bear conflicts, New Yorkers can follow BearWise basics:

Bear Prevention Tips:

  • Remove bird feeders.

  • Secure trash cans.

  • Clean grills.

  • Avoid outdoor food and pet feeding.

  • Use electric fencing for protection.

  • Keep refrigerators and freezers indoors.

Reporting Nuisance Bears:

  • Call 911 for immediate danger.

  • Contact regional wildlife office or DEC Law Enforcement Dispatch Center (1-844-DEC-ECOs) for nonemergency situations.
